John Neal Insualation Award 2019
The John Neal Insulation Award was given to two Master`s Degree students this year:
Máté Szirtes from the University of Budapest for his paper:
“The Development stages of a three-dimensional partial discharge location approximation system for industrial cast resin transformers.”
and
Sarah Rendl from the Polymer Competence Center Leoben / Montan-University of Leoben for her work on:
“Low-loss factor nanocomposites containing dispersed or covalently attached nanoparticles.”
Both winners gave a short summary presentation.
Máté Szirtes received 2000 €, Sarah Rendl 1000 € as the prize money.
EEIM has decided to focus on Master`s and Bachelor´s Degree papers in the future in order to attract young engineers and chemists to work in our industry.
In 2020, the prize money for the first winner will be 3000 €. In case we receive a second paper of similar high quality the second winner will receive 1500 €. The decisions will be made by the JNIA Award Committee chaired by Dr. Michael Chapman.

Annual General Meeting 2019
On May 20th ,2019 EEIM had its annual meeting, again at the Steigenberger Hotel Berlin City.
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen difficulties with flights from Manchester Airport, our Keynote Speaker, Mrs. Heather Wright, was not able to attend the meeting to give a speech. Heather Wright is a well-known, price-winning speaker in the fields of Leadership and Sales. We have already agreed with her that she is going to speak at our AGM 2020.
The secretary presented the financial reports which had been approved before by the Management Committee.
A longer discussion took place on exhibitions. In addition to the Coil Winding Berlin (CWIEME) other events in Italy have already established and a new exhibition will be held in April 2020 in Germany. The members were concerned about the increasing exhibition cost.
In the group sessions the Polymer Group re-elected Armin Kahnert from Stockmeier Urethanes as their group chairman. The group chairmen gave a summary of their separate group meetings to the general assembly.
John Neal Award 2018
For the 2018 John Neal Award it was decided by the Award Committee to have 2 winners:
Shanika Matharage from the University of Manchester
“Suitability of methanol as a paper ageing indicator for transformers with alternative insulating liquids“
The prize money for this paper was 2000 €. Unfortunately Shanika Matharage was not able to attend our AGM in order to give a presentation. Mike Chapman gave a short summary presentation of the paper to the members.
Florian Küchler from Technical University of Darmstadt
“Electrical characterization of nano-filled silicone rubber using the method of thermally stimulated depolarization currents”
The prize money for this was 1000 €. Florian Küchler presented his paper at the AGM. Both papers can be found in the members section of the website.
2018 Annual General Meeting
The EEIM Annual General Meeting was held on June 18Th, 2018 at the Steigenberger Hotel in Berlin.
The opening Keynote Speech was held by Mike Ryan, a well-known “Futurist” and entrepreneur who was looking into the development of science , technology and economy. His presentation was titled: “Brave New World”. He impressed the audience with a deep look into the technology revolution as well as into our working environment in the coming years.
In the general meeting Andrew Turner and Thorsten Sennewald were re-elected as Chairman and Vice Chairman of our association.
Dr. Michael Chapman, Chairman of the Award Committee for the John Neal Award, was included in the Management Committee (board) of EEIM.
From 2019 onward the award will be named John Neal Insulation Award (JNIA).
One of the topics discussed was the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which had its entry into force in May 2018. Members were informed by the Secretary about the implications and the compliance aspect of this regulation.
The Flexible Laminates Group within EEIM had decided already to dissolve itself because only 2 member companies were active in this sector.
2017 Annual General Meeting
The 2017 Annual General Meeting took place in Berlin on June 19th ,2017 at the Steigenberger Hotel Berlin. The attendance by our members was very good and we could again welcome new members. The keynote speech was held by Andreas Meier-Schwickerath from the British Chamber of Commerce in Germany on
“BREXIT- Status and Outlook”.
His interesting speech was giving our members an insight into the expected problems and challenges based on solid economical information. The presentation can be found in the “members only” section.
John-Neal- Award 2017
The winner of the 2017 John Neal Award is Anh Hoanh from Chalmers University for Technology in Sweden. His paper:
“Electrical conduction in low-density polyethylenes and its nanocomposites”
Unfortunately, Anh Huang was not able to attend the AGM for a presentation of his paper. The Chairman of the Award Committee, Dr. Michael Chapman gave a summary. A synopsis of the paper is available in the members section of this website.
Polymers Group: AEV Ltd from the UK joined EEIM
AEV joined EEIM early 2017. This will be another step forward for the polymers group to become a stakeholder group for our business segment.
Rigid Laminates Group: MICAM from Ireland joined EEIM
Shortly after the AGM 2015 VUKI from Bratislava/ Slovakia has decided to join EEIM as member of the Polymers group.
New Officers of EEIM
Bjarne Petersen was elected as the new Rigid Laminates Group Chairman. He succeeded Axel Rüting who had been the Chairman of this group for many years.
All the other officers and the Secretary continue in their office.
Future John Neal Award
A task-force has been established by the Management Committee during 2016 to look into a new concept for the JNA.
2017 Annual General Meeting
The AGM 2017 will be held on June 19th 2017 (traditionally always 1 day before the start of the CWIEME exhibition June 20th to June 22th )
2016 Annual General Meeting
The 2016 Annual General Meeting took place in Berlin on May 8th ,2016 at the Steigenberger Hotel. The attendance by our members was very good and we could welcome 2 new members.
The keynote speech was held by Professor Joe Howe from the University of Chester / UK on “Global Energy Challenges and Demands”. His speech was giving our members an insight into the future forecasts of the different types of energy. The Thornton Institute of the University is known for its expertise in this field. John-Neal- Award 2016
Annika-Sophie Rempe from the Technical University of München (TUM) is the 2016 John-Neal Award winner. She presented her paper: “Characterisation of Polymer-Filler-Interactions for a Model Nanocomposite Based on Silicone Rubber”. Axalta Coating Systems joined EEIM
Axalta Coating Systems joined EEIM end of 2015. This will be another step forward for the polymers group to become a stakeholder group for our business segment.
New Officers of EEIM
Andrew Turner (Langtec Ltd. / UK) has been elected unanimously as the new Chairman of EEIM. He succeeds Patrick Veluzat who has been in this office for the past 3 years.
Armin Kahnert (Stockmeier/ D) was elected as the new Product Group Chairman for the Polymers Group (Resins, varnishes and compounds).All the other officers and the Secretary were reconfirmed in their office.

Rainer Hinrichs-Rahlwes ( Chairman of the European Renewables Energy Federation) gave a remarkable insight into the
”Status and Trends in the Energy Economy in Europe and Globally”

Shortly after the AGM 2015 VUKI from Bratislava/ Slovakia has decided to join EEIM as member of the Polymers group.
2015 John Neal Award
Karsten Backhaus from the Technical University of Dresden is the 2015 Award winner with his paper:
“Charge Carrier based Conductivity and Breakdown Model for Oil Paper Insulation under High DC Voltage”.
2014 John Neal Award
The 2014 Award went to Michael Tenzer from TU Darmstadt for his paper “ New types of functionally filled polymers for HVDC insulators in gas-insulated systems”.

In Memorial of Tom Eland
Tom Eland from Attwater / UK passed away end of 2013.Tom has been active in various functions of our association, most to mention as Vice Chairman and member of the John Neal Award Committee
EEIM Annual General Meeting 2013 in Berlin
As in previous years the EEIM members took the opportunity to meet in Berlin on the day before the start of the Coil Winding Exhibition.
This year’s event had a very good attendance with a number of new members being present for the first time.
New Officers of EEIM
During the Product group sessions Fabio Botta has been elected as the Chairman of the Polymers Group to succeed Dr. Ulrich Massen. There was no change to the other officers.

2017 Annual General Meeting
An official special event was held in February at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg to honour the achievements of Dr. Ivana Mladenovic and the Award winning paper. Dr. Jörg Langer, former Secretary of EEIM , attended this event on behalf of the Chairman.

EEIM Annual General Meeting on June 3, 2013 in Berlin
This year `s AGM will be held again at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Berlin on the day before the start of the Coil Winding Show on June 4, 2013.
EEIM Management Committee decides to publish a position paper regarding anhydride hardeners
The position paper of EEIM deals with anhydride hardeners, which are frequently used for applications in the electrical insulation industry. Any regulatory action could directly effect the business of our members. Two anhydrides have been added to the Candidate list for Authorisation because of their respiratory sensitizing classification. EEIM takes the position that the use of these anhydrides is safe provided that appropriate risk management measures are taken. The complete paper can be accessed here …Download
